Help us get more children outside improving green spaces

Donation protected
Hi, My name is Steph and I'm one of the founders of Kids Plant Trees.

We're a not-for-profit organisation helping children and nature thrive together, across South Yorkshire (and beyond). ‍‍Some of the ways we do this are:

  • providing family friendly tree planting events and other nature based activities
  • creating hedgerows, community orchards, wildlife-friendly gardens and more
  • working with school pupils to improve their grounds for wildlife and themselves
  • working with local authorities, 'friends of' groups and other community organisations to engage children and families in looking after and improving their local green space (for the benefit of nature and people)

We're a small team with a big mission and we're achieving great things with your help. Since 2020, we have:

  • planted 8000+ trees with thousands of children (and their grown-ups)
  • helped 10 schools to improve their outside space
  • worked with communities to improve 7 public spaces for nature and people

Why donate?
Fewer than one in ten children regularly play in wild places; compared to almost half a generation ago. (2012 Natural Childhood report, National Trust)

Our school children are rapidly losing their connection with their local natural environments, particularly children from urban areas. Without this connection, they're unlikely to act to protect nature as they grow up - and with the natural world in crisis we need to nurture a new generation of nature guardians.

Spending time in nature is also proven to boost mental and physical health, as well as children's learning and development. There are many studies showing the many benefits, but we see it for ourselves every time we run an event. Children simply love being outside and interacting with nature - even the tentative ones, who aren't used to getting their hands dirty, leave our events with a big smile and eager to do it again.

We need your support to keep doing this important work, getting more children outside and improving their local green space (be that their school playground, a park or other publicly-accessible place).

We're so grateful for the donations we've received since we launched this crowdfunding page in autumn 2023. We've now increased our target to £5,000, to help us deliver a variety of projects and events this tree planting season (November 2024 to March 2025). This will go towards:

  • plants, soil and other materials needed for projects
  • equipment, e.g. tools and gloves
  • essential training for our team, e.g. First Aid
  • paying our fantastic team of experts, such as our forest school practitioner Helen, who brings an extra level of learning and fun to our events

For example: We’re helping Lowfield Primary School to improve their playground, creating flower beds for pollinator-friendly plants and creating mini-habitats for tiny creatures. We need to purchase plants, topsoil and other materials, and pay our wildlife-friendly gardener Annie for her time. Your donations will help us deliver this project (among others), with the children involved every step of the way.

Any amount you can give will be a huge help.

Alternatively, if your company would like to sponsor a project, please get in touch.

Thank you!
Steph and the KPT team
